Therapeutic Recreation

Therapeutic Recreation, also known as Recreational Therapy, aims to restore, remediate or rehabilitate patients in order to improve functioning and independence as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability. The primary purpose of Recreational Services is to provide recreation resources and opportunities in an effort to improve health and well-being.

Therapeutic Recreation plays an essential role in enriching the lives of our residents at East Neck through a variety of dynamic daily activities that cultivate self-expression, encourage socialization and promote wellness. All enrichment activities are thoughtfully designed with each resident's age, personal characteristics and cognitive and physical abilities in mind.  We proudly offer patients the opportunity to participate in stimulating programs that are carefully designed to promote wellness, enhance memory, improve communication, alleviate pain and manage stress.

For our residents with Alzheimer's and dementia, special programs are designed to encourage self-expression, reminiscence, socialization and communication. Creative workshops, art and music therapy are modalities used as outlets for expression and fulfillment for our Alzheimer's and dementia patients.

Research suggests music therapy can benefit those with physical and neurological conditions, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, related dementias and depression. Pet therapy, or the use of companion animals to promote health and healing, has been shown to have both physical and psychological benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and elevating mood.  Our Therapeutic Recreation staff incorporates both music and pet therapy to enhance quality of life at East Neck.

Therapeutic Recreation is provided by professionals who are trained and certified, registered and/or licensed to provide Therapeutic Recreation. (© ATRA, 1986)

Welcoming Patients, Visitors and Friends

Welcoming Patients, Visitors and Friends At East Neck, we perform in-house laboratory testing that often eliminates the need to send patients outside of the facility for necessary medical tests. We routinely screen patients for strep throat, mononucleosis and influenza and perform basic blood sugar, urinary and other laboratory testing as needed. Our practitioners will collect blood samples and send them out to outside laboratories for tests we do not perform in-house. For patients requiring x-ray imaging, East Neck conveniently performs in-house radiologic imaging using our digital x-ray system.
